Enabling Accurate and Efficient Simulation in Visual Computing - Public Colloquium

The overarching goal of Prof. Michels' Computational Sciences Group within KAUST's Visual Computing Center is enabling accurate and efficient simulations for applications in Scientific and Visual Computing. Towards this goal, the group develops new principled computational methods based on solid theoretical foundations. This talk covers a selection of previous and current work presenting a broad spectrum of research highlights ranging from simulating stiff phenomena such as the dynamics of fibers and textiles, over liquids containing magnetic particles, to the development of complex ecosystems and weather phenomena. Moreover, connection points to the growing field of machine learning are addressed and an outlook is provided with respect to selected technology transfer activities.

Jorge Alejandro Amador Herrera

Research Interest His research interests include scientific and visual computing, numerical simulations, machine learning, and the modelling of natural phenomena. He works on physically-based simulations. Honors and Awards During his studies at UNAM, Alejandro has been awarded many times. In 2013, he received the UNAM Scholarship from the university. He was also awarded the Telmex Foundation Scholarship from 2013 to 2016, and the CONACYT Fellowship from 2017 to 2018. He graduated with summa cum laude in 2018. Professor Michels is a leading computer scientist who proactively designs strategies to face upcoming digitization challenges. His outstanding research has been recognized by the scientific community within and beyond KAUST.

Dmitry Lyakhov

Dmitry Lyakhov is a Research Scientist at the Visual Computing Center (VCC) in King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), working with Professor Dominik Michels in the Computational Sciences Group (CSG). Education and Early Career Dmitry Lyakhov graduated from Belarusian State University with a master's degree in Theoretical Physics and, later on, a Ph.D. in Mathematics. He is also an alumnus of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and visiting scholar of von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics. In 2018, he received a Nanodegree in Machine Learning.
