This workshop is devoted to numerical simulation of groundwater flow and subsurface contamination transport, as well as related problems. The main topics are mathematical modeling of the processes in porous media and the numerical methods for discretization, solution of the discretized systems and numerical treatment of inverse problems. In particular, fractured porous media and partially saturated aquifers will be concerned.

On the Mathematics of Turbulent flows

The understanding and description of turbulent flows poses several different problems in which theory, modeling, and (numerical) experiments interact in a multidisciplinary way. In this talk we present some of the basic tools, focusing on the mathematical foundation of the models used to describe the larger scales of the incompressible motions at high Reynolds number. Recent perspectives and open problems are also discussed.

Marc Genton, KAUST distinguished professor of statistics, and his former postdoctoral fellow Stefano Castruccio, have jointly won the 2017 Wilcoxon Award for best applications paper in Technometrics. Technometrics is a journal of statistics for the Physical, Chemical and Engineering Sciences, and is published quarterly by the American Society for Quality and the American Statistical Association. Stefanos Georgiadis is an applied mathematics graduate who will join KAUST from the School of Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Athens, Greece. Theodoros Katsaounis

Short Bio Dr. Theodoros Katsaounis is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Crete. He received his Ph.D in 1994 for the Univ. of Tennessee USA, in applied mathematics. After his postdoctoral studies in the Ecole Normale Superieure of Paris, he joined the Dept. of Applied Mathematics of Univ. of Crete, Greece as an Assistant professor in 2003. Dr. Katsaounis was a Research Scientist at KAUST from 2015 to 2020. His research interests are in the area of applied and computational mathematics. Simone Portaro

Simone Portaro is a Ph.D. Student in the Computer, Electrical, Mathematical Sciences and Engineering (CEMSE) department at the Applied Mathematics and Computational Sciences (AMCS) program under the supervision of Professor Peter Markowich at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. Nadezhda Briantceva

Nadezhda is a Ph.D. student in the Advanced Simulations and Algorithms Lab (AANSLab) and the Communication Theory Lab (CTLab) under the supervision of Professor Matteo Parsani and Professor Mohamed-Slim Alouini. Education and Early Career Nadezhda obtained her bachelor degree in Applied Mathematics and Computational Science from Saint Petersburg State University (SPbSU) in 2018. Håkon A. Hoel

Håkon Hoel was a visiting researcher in the Stochastic Numerics Group at KAUST. He holds an MSc degree in Computational Science from the University of Oslo (2016) and a Ph.D. in Numerical Analysis from KTH Royal Institute of Technology (2012). His main research interests are numerical analysis of stochastic differential equations, nonlinear filtering, and multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) methods. His research interests also include different aspects of implementation and error estimation of stochastic models in the following areas: adaptive weak approximation of stochastic differential equations
